As I learned more about mental illness, my view of it changed substantially. By the time I was halfway through college, I realized that my anxiety and mood disorder had a significant impact on my functioning and that mental health existed on a much wider spectrum than I thought. My lived experience with mental illness was one of several factors that influenced me to study human behavior. But what about people who do not have the desire to learn about this topic? Are their impressions as biased, extreme, and inaccurate as the examples I mentioned above?

Why we should care about children’s mental wellbeing – and how to help

The Nestlé study of more than 800 parents found that sleeping issues, anxiety and depression were the most common issues affecting emotional and mental wellbeing, with self-esteem issues, bereavement and weight issues and eating disorders the next most common. Risk factors that can trigger mental health and wellbeing issues include poor health, a parent with mental illness, alcohol issues or who spends time in jail, parents who separate or divorce, a death of someone close, acting as carer to a parent and special educational needs – though this list is of course by no means exhaustive.

Children and teenagers are facing an “intolerable” mental health crisis and an urgent cash injection is needed in schools to prevent a lifetime of damage, teachers, doctors and MPs have warned. The intervention comes after a Children’s Society report revealed more than 100,000 children aged 14 in the UK are self-harming, with 22% of girls affected. The revelation was described as “deeply worrying” by the charity.

It aims to assist governments in responding to the health needs of adolescents in their countries, including mental health. It emphasises the benefits of actively including adolescents in developing national policies, programmes and plans.

WHO's Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP), provides evidence-based technical guidance, tools and training packages to expand countries’ health services, particularly in low-resourced contexts. It considers issues related to adolescents throughout, including a specific module on Child and Adolescent Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

'Just Breathe': Mallika Chopra's guide to help kids de-stress and learn mindfulness

 

Chopra, the daughter of wellness guru Deepak Chopra, practised meditation and mindfulness with her family from a young age. Now, the mom of two daughters is bringing the ancient art to a new generation -- including her own kids -- in her book, "Just Breathe: Meditation, Mindfulness and More. "It's a book written for kids, with the goal to empower children directly with the tools to find more calm in their lives, be more focused and generally be happier."

Trauma can happen to anyone, at any age. It’s important to be aware of how trauma can trigger mental health issues in young people, to prevent mental health conditions before they reach a crisis. Half of all mental health conditions start by age 14. By increasing understanding of trauma and recognition of early warning signs of mental health conditions, we can get young people to seek help and support as soon as possible so that they can address issues before a crisis, before Stage 4.

 

The MHA 2018 Back to School Toolkit will provide young people with information to help them understand the effects of trauma, including the onset of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and psychosis.

 

This year’s toolkit includes:

Meditation for kids: the benefits and the methods

Childhood and teenage years are foundational in our development as human beings. It is when our personalities are formed, our view of the world developed, and our ways of relating to others and to ourselves established. The skills and tools we learn in our early years have a huge impact on the rest of our lives—and that is why meditation is such a great gift to give to a child.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to share meditation with their children—and teachers to incorporate mindfulness training into their lesson plans.

Mind-body therapies are popular and are ranked among the top 10 complementary and integrative medicine practices reportedly used by adults and children in the 2007–2012 National Health Interview Survey. A growing body of evidence supports the effectiveness and safety of mind-body therapies in pediatrics.

This clinical report outlines popular mind-body therapies for children and youth and examines the best-available evidence for a variety of mind-body therapies and practices, including biofeedback, clinical hypnosis, guided imagery, meditation, and yoga. The report is intended to help health care professionals guide their patients to nonpharmacologic approaches to improve concentration, help decrease pain, control discomfort, or ease anxiety.

This week, the Mindfulness Foundation and our fellow members of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition welcomed the government's response to the Green Paper consultation on 'Transforming children and young people's mental health'. The consultation period lasted 13 weeks from December 2017 to March 2018 and received over 2,700 responses.

Government takes ‘major step’ towards better PSHE for all

PSHE Association welcomes new government commitment to mandatory health education in addition to existing commitments to mandatory relationships and sex education.

 

This makes the majority of PSHE education mandatory for all pupils, in all schools from 2020. The move represents a major step towards addressing concerns about consistency of quality and reduced curriculum time for PSHE, despite its proven benefits. This shouldn’t de-prioritise other aspects of PSHE. Learning about economic wellbeing and preparing for work are vital and inextricably linked to health and relationships.

A new online resource - the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Tracker - is the first website that enables people to see progress towards the goals. Compiled by Oxford Martin School researchers.

Oxford Martin Fellow Hannah Ritchie, of Our World in Data and the Oxford Martin Programme on Global Development, said the new site - SDG-Tracker.org - meant citizens could become more actively involved with their global and country-specific progress towards the goals.

Studies have found that meditation can improve focus, lower stress, improve emotional regulation, help us get back to a task at hand after being distracted, and enhance compassion and creativity -- all qualities incredibly important to the workplace. And in 2016, a review co-authored by Christopher Lyddy at Case Western Reserve and Darren Good at Pepperdine looked at 4,000 studies on mindfulness. What the authors found was that mindfulness improved performance levels across a broad range of categories. And they also addressed the question of motivation. “Mindfulness may support goal pursuit through improved attentional and motivational properties.”

The first research MYRIAD paper, “Mindfulness Training in UK Secondary Schools: a Multiple Case Study Approach to Identification of Cornerstones of Implementation” led by Dr Stephanie Wilde and Professor Willem Kuyken, explores the journeys towards the implementation of mindfulness training in seven UK secondary schools. The paper identifies common factors that facilitated or hindered implementation in each diverse school setting and the learning from the paper will be used to support the ongoing implementation of mindfulness in the schools participating in the MYRIAD trial.

Our new report “Schools and Mental Health” lays bare the scale and severity of the UK’s Youth Mental health crisis, showing that children in desperate need are being refused help. One young person was told a suicide attempt was ‘not serious enough’ for them to access support.

 

Schools and Mental Health” published with the education and youth ‘think and action tank’ LKMco warns that despite the government’s increasing focus on mental health it is likely to miss its own targets for improved services due to patchy implementation, a severe lack of funding and a shortage of trained specialists.

UCL Millennium Cohort Study Age 14 Survey

 

At age 14, almost one in four (24%) girls and one in ten (9%) boys reported experiencing high levels of depressive symptoms. These findings show that we need to intervene early in childhood in order to prevent mental health problems from emerging – waiting until problems manifest themselves in the adolescent years is simply too late.”

 

The research team analysed the results of a survey of 14-year-old boys and girls who all take part in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) – a study which is run by CLS and which has been following their lives closely since they were born.

Australia's first mindfulness curriculum launched

 

Schools will be now able to access Australia’s first dedicated mindfulness curriculum thanks to a collaboration between leading educators, psychologists and mindfulness experts. Led by the team behind Australian wellbeing and mindfulness meditation app Smiling Mind, the Mindfulness Curriculum has been designed to provide a framework and practical resource for the way teachers embed mindfulness in schools. With up to 20% of Australian students currently disengaged at school, research shows that mindfulness can help young people develop the emotional, behavioural and attention regulation skills that set the crucial foundation for learning and train students to be better equipped for the pressures of adult life.

The narrow scope does not take several vulnerable groups into account, and the proposals put significant pressure on the teaching workforce without guaranteeing sufficient resources. The discovery of genes that are linked to the crippling condition throws up exciting new possibilities for its successful treatment. Depression runs in families, we know. But it is only very recently, and after considerable controversy and frustration, that we are beginning to know how and why. The major scientific discoveries reported last week by the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium in Nature Genetics are a hard-won breakthrough in our understanding of this very common and potentially disabling disorder.

Mental health counselling in primary school could offer a six-fold return on investment

 

This Pro Bono Economics report calculates that for every £1 invested (£4.2m in total), Place2Be’s counselling service has the potential to deliver a societal return of £6.20 (£25.9m in total) by improving long-term outcomes for each child. This return is achieved through higher rates of employment and earnings and by reducing rates of school truancy, exclusion, smoking, depression and crime.

The number of teachers seeking mental health support has risen by 35% in the past 12 months. Many of them are in crisis.

From April 2017 to March 2018, the number of teachers seeking support increased by 35%, from 2,321 to 3,136. How’s Life? 2017 charts the promises and pitfalls for people’s well-being in 35 OECD countries and 6 partner countries. It presents the latest evidence from 50 indicators, covering both current well-being outcomes and resources for future wellbeing, and including changes since 2005. During this period there have been signs of progress, but gains in some aspects of life have been offset by losses elsewhere. This fourth edition highlights the many faces of inequality, showing that gaps in people’s achievements and opportunities extend right across the different dimensions of well-being. It exposes divisions according to age, gender, and education, and reveals pockets of inequality in all OECD countries. It also brings to light the many wellbeing disadvantages that migrants face in adapting to life abroad.

Mass Medical School Creates First Division of Mindfulness

As the bar for research on mindfulness raises dramatically, a big change at the University of Massachusetts unites top-tier minds with increased resources to study meditation’s therapeutic potential. Likening the development to when “a teenager comes of age and leaves the house,” Brewer explained that the decision to establish an entire medical division dedicated to mindfulness is in many ways the natural next step for an area that’s grown exponentially over the past four decades. “This really highlights how far the field has progressed and matured,” he said.

To support more schools to do so the Government has published a blueprint for school counselling services. This provides practical, evidence-based advice on how to deliver high-quality school-based counselling to all pupils.

Around half of all mental health problems start before the age of 14 and we know that Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services are currently facing an increase in demand. It will help teachers spot the early signs of mental illness in young children and follows a similar scheme introduced in high schools last summer. “This training will help put schools on the front foot in identifying and helping children who are struggling.”

NZ Government to lead world in measuring success with wellbeing measures

 

New Zealand plans to be the first in the world to measure its success against how it does socially, culturally and environmentally.

 

During her first major public address of the year, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her Labour-led Government wanted to go further than the child poverty measures it had announced this week. By the 2019 Budget, it would introduce a tool and framework to include the wellbeing of New Zealanders a measure of our economic success.
