The Mindfulness All-party Parliamentary Group (APPG)
The Mindfulness All-party Parliamentary Group (MAPPG) has been formally reinstated following its dissolution at the General Election. The group's AGM was held in Portcullis House on Tuesday 30th June and two new co-chairs were elected: Jessica Morden, Labour MP for Newport East, and Tim Loughton, Conservative MP for East Worthing and Shoreham.

How meditation could be beneficial in schools
Research in the fields of psychology, education and neuroscience shows teaching meditation in schools is having positive effects on students' well-being, social skills and academic skills.
A recent meta-review of the impact of meditation in schools combined the results from 15 studies and almost 1800 students from the UK, Australia, Canada, India, the US and Taiwan. The research showed meditation is beneficial in most cases and led to three broad outcomes for students: higher well-being, better social skills and greater academic skills.

Welcome to the Children and Young People's Mental Health and Wellbeing Profiling Tool. It has been developed to support an intelligence driven approach to understanding and meeting need.
It collates and analyses a wide range of publically available data on risk, prevalence and detail (including cost data) on those services that support children with, or vulnerable to, mental illness. It provides commissioners, service providers, clinicians, services users and their families with the means to benchmark their area against similar populations and gain intelligence about what works.

A New Way Forward

Mental health problems cost the UK economy an estimated £70- 100 billion each year. Mental health services are overstretched, waiting times are too long and some areas lack specialist services. Yet public spending is focused almost entirely on coping with crisis, with only insignificant investment in prevention. At the same time the human costs of mental health problems grow unabated. It is time to change the model and to move spending upstream to prevent problems occurring.
Can we prevent mental health problems? Of course ... the evidence is incontrovertible.

On a Wednesday afternoon in early May, after a full day of studying the Byzantine Empire and sitting through lessons on annotation and critical reading, the sixth-graders in Zsazita Walker’s social studies and language arts class were, expectedly, acting like sixth-graders. School was almost over and the classroom, scattered with posters, worksheets and lesson plans, was buzzing with chatty, curious 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds who knew they'd soon be free from class.
But before dismissal, one exercise remained. The kids shuffled from grouped tables to neat, forward-facing rows of desks. Walker counted down from five, telling her students to make sure the table tops were cleared. A boy walked to the front of the classroom, sat in a chair to face his classmates, and rang a bell.

National Conference Mindfulness in Schools
Tell a group of teenage boys they are going to sit in a classroom and ‘learn to focus on their breathing’ and you might expect to receive looks of wry derision However, if you can show them something that will help them to cope with the personal pressures of being a 21st century teenager, as well as achieve top performance academically, on the sports field and in the performing arts – then you’ll catch and keep their attention. To date, more than 800 of our Year 10 pupils have followed a course of mindfulness lessons which does this and their reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

Caroline Woods teaches year one and two at The Dharma primary school in Brighton and starts her class every day with a few minutes of silent mindfulness practice. She says getting the children to sit still and in silence isn't the struggle you might imagine. Students actually look forward to a time when all they have to do is stop, be calm and listen.

Mindfulness, has much in common with cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT) in as much as it supports strategies to give pause to - and even avoid - negative thought cycles and feelings. Will mindfulness lessons help to calm my children?
I am blown away by the simplicity and variety of the exercises. It seems almost too obvious to state that if you breathe properly you calm down, and slowly appreciating food or your feelings will enhance and de-stress your life. But it is making such a difference to those schoolchildren lucky enough to have sessions that there is a strong argument for it to be offered nationwide . . .

Why ignoring mental wellbeing is a risk to public health

The UK’s chief medical officer, Professor Sally Davies, has given the topic urgency by calling for mental health to be given the same level of esteem as other urgent public health priorities such as obesity. 2015 World Happiness Report

Switzerland is the happiest country in the world, closely followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada, according to a global ranking of happiness unveiled in New York. Japan ranked 46th, one place above South Korea. China took 84th spot. The 2015 World Happiness Report is the third annual report seeking to quantify happiness as a means of influencing government policy. The United Nations published the first study in 2012.

Mindfulness as good as pills for treating recurrent depression
A new study has revealed that mindfulness-based therapy could offer a new treatment choice for millions of people with recurrent depression.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) could provide an alternative non-drug treatment for people who do not wish to continue long-term antidepressant treatment. The results come from the first ever large study to compare MBCT - structured training for the mind and body which aims to change the way people think and feel about their experiences, with maintenance antidepressant medication for reducing the risk of relapse in depression.

Mindfulness very gently moving around the world's classrooms
This year, the Mindfulness in Schools Project has scheduled teacher training in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Finland, Thailand, the Netherlands and Australia. Its ".b" curriculum has been translated into Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Icelandic, French, German and Spanish, indicating its growing international appeal. It is just one of many mindfulness programs currently in operation.
In the United States, for example, the MindUP initiative, which incorporates "brain breaks" several times a day, has been operating for 12 years. Another program, known as Quiet Time has been credited with improving school attendance and halving suspensions in a troubled school in San Francisco. Wake Up Schools is another initiative, with centres in France and the United States, which has also provided mindfulness training in India

Brain science talks were hugely oversubscribed at this year’s World Economic Forum, leading some management academics to mutter about the days when business professors, not scientists, were the Davos crowd-pullers. At one session, Tania Singer of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences revealed preliminary research that shows intensive exercises in empathy, perspective-taking and mindfulness can break selfish habits and change “the brain’s hardware” so people become more altruistic. Robert Shiller, an economist, told the same audience such results could shake the fundamental underpinnings of orthodox economics. The research has implications for management, too.

On Saturday 28 February the Mindfulness Foundation presented the Ofsted Wellbeing Proposal to Edward Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. We recommend that the online Data Dashboard be enhanced to include a snapshot of Wellbeing performance. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), applied to looked-after children since 2008, would be extended to all children and become a Wellbeing measure. All children should receive weekly 'happiness' lessons from the age of five
Children of all ages should be given an hour’s “happiness lessons” every week to nurture their development and stop schools behaving as “exams factories,” a major report will warn this week. It comes as separate figures show the numbers of children receiving counselling sessions because of exam stress has tripled in just one year.
Former ministers and Government advisors are calling for radical changes in the way British pupils are brought up, with accusations of a “grossly inhumane” failure to care for children’s wellbeing. Their report, due to be presented to a global health summit this week will say mental health problems among children and teenagers have become “a massive problem” with one in 10 now suffering from diagnoses such as anxiety and depression.
ACTION POINT 6. MEASUREMENT:
Schools should measure pupil wellbeing regularly. Schools need an ethos that promotes children’s wellbeing and identifies children who are languishing; but they should also devote at least an hour a week to education in life skills. Children and young people need to learn how to understand and manage their own emotions, understand others and care for them, manage their sexual relationships responsibly, eat and drink sensibly and avoid drugs, understand mental disorders and what can be done about them, understand parenting, manage their responses to modern media and choose positive life goals. There are now hundreds of programs that have been developed worldwide to address one or more of these issues. Many of these programs have been rigorously evaluated on the whole age cohort in a school and been found to produce good results, at least in the short run. This was the finding of Durlak et al that we quoted earlier,67 and it related to impacts in the first six months after the programs ended. But, in the few cases where children have been followed up over a longer period, the effects have often been found to fade over time and, in many cases, to disappear.68 This is not surprising given that the programs typically average 20 hours. We should also note that many quite famous programs have had at least one trial which found no effects.69
This leads to two important conclusions. First, if children are to develop good life skills, they need more than one or two 20-hour programs: they need a whole curriculum of life skills, at least once a week throughout the school life. As Aristotle observed, good habits are learned through interesting repetition in varying contexts. Second, this curriculum should be evidence-based and depend as little as possible on inspired improvisation by the teacher. It is universally found that the best results follow from using detailed materials accompanied by a good manual on how to use them and some explicit training of the teachers70 (this is not so different from what is needed for a good surgical operation.) And the best results always come from offering a positive vision rather than warnings about what not to do.

Working with young people on a mental health app project is so refreshing and invigorating. You see, young people tend to not hide the truth and will see things in
a more open and obvious way. This is in stark contrast to the ‘busy’ and sometimes ‘clouded’ approach that the older (yes, my generation) has.
OK, I may be painting a general picture here but after our second workshop with the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) and the Anna Freud Centre (AFC), it is clear to see that if you are developing a mobile application, that you must include your end users in the discovery and planning stage of your project.

It is no longer satisfactory to purely measure Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as this does not give an indication of the actual wellbeing of the population. It is being taught at many leading schools as a way of tackling children’s depression and anxiety, but academics have found it can also improve pupils’ attainment. Almost 100 children aged nine to 11, at four schools in Canada, took part in mindfulness classes and were then compared with classmates who were not participating in the programme.

It’s a “must-have”: a way to keep our brains healthy, to support self-regulation and effective decision-making capabilities, and to protect ourselves from toxic stress. It can be integrated into one’s religious or spiritual life, or practiced as a form of secular mental training. When we take a seat, take a breath, and commit to being mindful, particularly when we gather with others who are doing the same, we have the potential to be changed.

This report identifies that secondary schools could improve overall levels of wellbeing by implementing a regular measurement of pupil wellbeing. Further findings call for the provision of additional staff training to help identify the early warning signs of mental health illness in young people, particularly as half of all diagnosable mental health conditions are thought to start before the age of 14 and 75% by the age of 21.

Head calls for a 'daily stillness
Sir Anthony Seldon has called for schools to give over part of their timetable to a 'daily stillness period' to prevent mental health issues among young people. "We have a ticking time bomb of mental health issues amongst the young, and schools are still not doing enough," he warned.
